We interviewed Park Hyunwoo, a beginner in the industry, and Oh Jonghoon, a veteran operator with 20 years of experience in the field. Mr. Park Hyunwoo“Hi, my name’s Park Hyunwoo. I am younger than the average population in the industry, so everyone gets surprised hearing how old I am. My father works as an excavator operator, so it was natural for me to be one as well. It’s been two years and a half since I started.”Mr. Oh Jonghoon“Nice to meet you, my name’s Oh Jonghoon. I’ve been working in this industry for about 20 years. It’s my first time being involved in an interview like this, but I’ll try my best to answer your questions. (Laughter)” Before asking them about their experience of using Hi MATE, we asked them to review the machine they are currently operating. Park“I’m driving an HW145+. It’s been only five months, but I am satisfied with the machine in general. The movement of the machine is smooth in particular, so I could perform very delicate and detailed movements.” “It also seems that a lot of effort has been put into the cabin interior. The touchscreen cluster lets me check the operation information and make various adjustments, which are very convenient. The seat is also very comfortable, so I feel less fatigued working long hours.Overall, there is nothing much that I feel the machine lacks. But it tends to stutter when I make a combined movement quickly, while there is no problem connecting the movement of the arm and the boom one by one. I hope this gets improved soon.” Oh“I had my HW155A delivered three weeks ago. I’ve been using machines made by Hyundai Construction Equipment, and I feel HW155A shows an enormous improvement in its performance compared to its preceding models, especially in its speed and power. I don’t think I have found any aspect that could have been done better.” “More than anything, HW155A has remarkable steering control. With a little bit of exaggeration, I could tell people that I don’t have to touch the steering wheel to drive the machine. I told such positive comments about the machine to many people around me, which made them decide on getting their HW155A.” The HW145+ and HW155A that Park and Oh drive have Hi MATE equipped in default. How are they using the feature? Park“Hi MATE would help people like me, who are new to operating construction equipment. HW145+ is my second machine, and my first one suffered from my inexperience. I had no idea how to maintain the machine or when to have it checked back then, which led to me breaking down my machine many times because I missed the replacement interval for the consumables. After using Hi MATE, I rarely make such mistakes. Maintaining my machine became easier as the app informs me to replace the components.Another great feature from Hi MATE would be location tracking. It helps prevent theft, but it could also be a big help for receiving maintenance services. The mechanics don’t have to navigate their way to the malfunctioning equipment according to my explanation of the machine’s location. Rather, they can look up its location via Hi MATE and get there much quicker, solving the issue more promptly.” Oh“The features I use most frequently are the remote engine control and the remote A/C control. During hot weather, I turn the A/C on my way to the vehicle and turn the heater on during winter. It cools down or heats the cabin before I get on the machine. It might sound trivial, but it brings an incredible improvement in my work efficiency. There is nothing more demotivating than a poorly-conditioned cabin.Also, on a very rare occasion, I can’t remember if I turned off the engine before getting off my machine. Without Hi MATE’s remote engine control, I used to have to walk to the machine to check it myself. But now, I could turn on the app and conveniently turn it off if the engine is running.”Park and Oh find Hi MATE’s “Real-time Maintenance” feature and “Remote Engine and A/C control” feature to be the most useful. What are their opinions on Hi MATE’s “Fleet Monitor” feature, which monitors the machine’s status and analyzes malfunction codes to advise the user to get predictive maintenance? Park“As I mentioned, I’m still not veteran enough to take care of my machine. It was much worse when I was operating my first equipment, costing me a fortune getting it fixed after it breaks down. If I have had the Fleet Service feature with me, I would have saved a lot of money. (Laughter)” Oh“As an operator, I appreciate the information on the signs of possible malfunction in advance. Predictive or preventive maintenance before severe malfunction benefits the operator in terms of money, but what is more important is that it greatly reduces the machine’s downtime. The more serious a problem is, the longer the downtime will be, which means not being able to work longer. It might be the greatest risk an operator could take.I am yet to try the Fleet Monitor service as it hasn’t been a month since I received my HW155A. But if I were to have a problem, it would be a big help for me.” HCE’s Hi MATE system satisfies both a youngblood to the industry and a 20-year veteran.
