The thrill of strategizing sales on a global scale!

Construction Equipment Parts Sales, AM Sales Team I, Sales Division

Shin Hyeong-seop, Manager

  • Hello, Mr. Shin. Could you introduce yourself?

Hello. My name is Shin Hyeong-seop, and I'm a manager in AM Sales Team I at HD Hyundai Construction Equipment. I joined the company in January 2023 and am currently in my second year. I am the youngest member of the team, and the way the senior employees show that they care about me and share their know-how has been driving me to work hard.

  • What does the AM Sales Team do?

The name, "AM Sales Team," may sound a bit unfamiliar.
AM stands for "after market," so the AM Sales Team is responsible for marketing and selling parts and fluids among other things required by overseas customers after purchasing a vehicle from us. In simpler terms, we are responsible for "parts sales." When you get your car repaired, you usually go to a dealership that sells genuine parts to purchase them, right? Our team supplies and sells those genuine parts to the dealers

HD Hyundai Construction Equipment does not sell directly to end users, but sells its products through dealers, so it is important to make sure that our parts are supplied to dealers effectively and that our dealers and end users are communicating with each other smoothly. We travel overseas to check these matters and provide sales guidance to dealers. I'm personally in charge of exporting to the Middle East and China.

  • Was there an impetus for you to join HD Hyundai Construction Equipment?

I believed it would be a good fit for me in the long run.
HD Hyundai Construction Equipment is actually my third company.
I worked at a different company for about three years, in PR and marketing as well as purchasing.
After experiencing various roles, I realized that I wanted to work in overseas sales, so I applied to HD Hyundai Construction Equipment as a non-experienced worker.
I also wanted to work overseas as a resident employee, as it would allow me to gain various work experiences.
What I learned at my previous company has been very useful during my time at HD Hyundai Construction Equipment, so I consider those three years to be a blessing rather than a waste of time.

  • What do you love most about your job?

    Frequent business trips!
I'm sure those of you who want to work in global sales have a desire to go on overseas business trips.
One of the things I considered when choosing a company to apply to was whether I would be able to go on overseas business trips. This was because I believed that you can only fully comprehend the work you do and its impact once you finally meet the people you have communicated with from the office by e-mail and actually see the worksite with your own eyes.
By going on overseas business trips, you'll feel like you're doing something tangible, and you'll experience a sense of accomplishment every time. If you want to be able to travel overseas, formulate business strategies, and experience what it feels like to boost sales, you'll definitely love this job.

  • What skills do you need to do your job?

I work in international sales, so English is a must, but you don't need to be fluent like a native speaker. As long as you can organize and communicate your thoughts in English, you'll do fine.
To be more specific, you should be able to write business e-mails and conduct simple meetings in English. In fact, when I travel overseas for business, I mostly use English to communicate with dealers and make PowerPoint presentations.
The second most important skill is the ability to work with Excel. They say that if you want to leave work early, you need to be good at Excel, right?
Excel skills are really important to work efficiently. I actually didn't need to use Excel at my previous job.
So, at HD Hyundai Construction Equipment, I struggled a lot in the beginning because I had to use it quite often.
I recall manually entering the data into the cells one by one because I thought it'd take less time than looking for the relevant Excel functions. Later, I found out that Excel greatly improves your work efficiency the more you learn it, so I think it'd be great to come here with strong Excel skills.
The AM Sales Team deals with all the parts that make up an excavator, starting with the tiniest bolt, so there's a lot to learn. I advise you to be as persistent as possible and try to learn how things work, even if you aren't able to grasp every single part perfectly. I'm still learning. Don't be impatient, don't be afraid, and stay tenacious while pushing past your limits.

  • What has been your most memorable work experience since joining the company?

I'd say my first overseas business trip was probably the most memorable.
I was lucky enough to go on a business trip to China just two months after joining the company, and as someone who did not know the ins and outs of an excavator, it was an eye-opening experience to meet with suppliers and see production sites. I felt that no matter how much I studied at the office using the learning materials, I simply couldn't absorb everything.
I think the expression, "A picture is worth a thousand words," is absolutely accurate. I realized and learned more by seeing things firsthand.
This business trip during my early days at HD Hyundai Construction Equipment left a strong impression on me, so I've been trying to go on business trips, both domestically and internationally, whenever I have the opportunity.

  • Is there anything you'd like to say to those looking to apply to HD Hyundai Construction Equipment?

What do you think of when you hear "HD Hyundai Construction Equipment"?
I personally imagined that it'd be a company that only engineering majors, especially mechanical engineering, could join.
However, I learned that there are employees with various other majors. I majored in Chinese, and the members of my team have majored in non-engineering disciplines as well, so I'd like to say to applicants that there's no need to hesitate to apply to our company because of your major.
What's more important than your major is your experience. And don't overthink the term, "experience," either.
I recommend letting the interviewer know what you did specifically and how you communicated when you needed to collaborate with others, whether it was in a club, for a team project, for a part-time job, for an internship, and so on. So, good luck!
